1.4 Million Unplanned Babies Born Amidst Economic Crisis In Pandemic; UN Report

 As per the latest reports from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) there were 1.4 million “unplanned newborns” were born across the world. This comes amidst the pandemic that had disrupted the lives of the people especially in the lower and middle income countries.

Pandemic Disrupted Access To Family Planning Facilities

The project looked at the amount of contraceptives distributes across the 115 countries in the world. Amidst the travel restriction, overwhelming health facilities and the interrupted supply chains, the lower and middle income families were left with less or no access to family planning facilities.

The report suggested that the data shows that the condition of women as the “reproductive destinies” and how often their preferences were undermined throughout the pandemic. The UNFPA report further said that the unplanned pregnancies put further burden on the finances of the families who were already struggling throughout the pandemic.

Unplanned Pregnancies Also Lead To Unsafe Abortions

The report further demonstrated that the unplanned pregnancies also led to some unsafe abortions as well. The data showed the involvement of 12 million women especially in the months from April – May 2020.

However, the UN agency informed that the situation could have been a lot worse if quick wasn’t taken towards restoring health services. Because of the efforts of many, they were able to deliver the contraceptives and other supplies in spite of the rising costs and restricted supply chains.

The UN said that women continue to face obstacles in receiving family planning guidance.
