25 killed due to flash floods in Afghanistan

A government spokesperson said on Wednesday that at least twenty-five people died and forty others wounded in the heavy floods in Afghanistan eastern Parwan province.

The cause of the sudden floods in the area was due to the heavy rains late on Tuesday night. Which ripped into a residential area situated in the central part of the province. Wahida Shahkar a Provincial government spokesperson told Xinhua news agency.

“At least twenty-five villagers were killed, over forty others wounded and tens of houses and wide areas of arable lands have been washed out during the overnight floods,” she told.

The local government and provincial directorate officials of disaster management and humanitarian affairs will soon visit the affected villages to assist, she also said

She told that there may be a possibility of the casualties reported may be higher and more details will be shared with the media later in the day.

Adding to the fatalities, The disaster management ministry of Afghanistan also mentioned that apart from the dozens injured, 500 homes were destroyed.

The toll was updated as the rescue workers continued their search through the rubbles of the destroyed buildings for any survivors.

Fazludin Ayar the Parwan Governor told the local reporters that “we could have hundreds of people killed.”

Mohamed Qasim a farmer told AFP news that his Eleven family members died due to the floods.

another resident Hamida a 70-year-old said AFP that  “I grabbed the window and was holding it for two hours until the neighbors came to rescue me.” also adding that she had “lost everything” that she owned.

Usually, heavy rainfall occurs during the summer in the eastern and northern parts of Afghanistan, which often leads to flash floods that leave hundreds of deads every year.
