The Telangana State Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has revealed that 45 percent of cyber criminals apprehended over the past six months are graduates or postgraduates, including those with degrees in BTech, MBA, and MCA. This alarming statistic was part of a report released by the TGCSB, which marked the completion of its first six months of operations.
The report highlights that the Bureau has successfully apprehended 165 cyber criminals from across the country, who were involved in 76 cases under the TGCSB’s Cyber Crime Police Stations (CCPS). These criminals are connected to a total of 795 cases in Telangana alone and 3,357 cases nationwide.
The arrested individuals come from a wide range of backgrounds. According to the Bureau’s data, 20 percent of the criminals are intermediate-level students, while 35 percent are illiterate or have below-SSC education. Shockingly, 34 percent of the offenders are businessmen, operating in sectors such as hotels, restaurants, and real estate. In addition, 21 percent are self-employed, including digital content creators, cab drivers, gym trainers, event managers, and rural medical practitioners (RMPs).

The report also reveals that 14 percent of the criminals were employed in private sector jobs, such as petrol bunk workers, garment shop employees, and delivery service workers. Another 14 percent were unemployed, while 9 percent were students. The remaining offenders include farmers, labourers, and even government employees, particularly assistants in irrigation and electricity departments.
The TGCSB’s efforts to arrest these criminals have not been without significant challenges. Officers faced difficult conditions during many of the arrests, including challenging social, demographic, and geographical conditions. In some cases, police officers encountered resistance, including the threat of mob attacks and non-cooperation from local law enforcement in certain regions.
The arrested individuals were detained from various states across India, including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, New Delhi, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. The Bureau has shared the details of these arrests with concerned police stations across the country.
The report underscores the growing threat posed by cyber criminals in India. Despite the high level of education among a significant portion of offenders, cyber crime continues to thrive across the country. The TGCSB’s proactive efforts in tracking and apprehending these criminals are expected to increase as more cases of online fraud, hacking, and cyber harassment are reported.
Cyber crime has become one of the most pressing concerns for law enforcement, with the increasing digitization of services and social interactions. Telangana’s proactive stance, under the leadership of the Cyber Security Bureau, is seen as a model for other states to tackle the rising tide of cyber-related offenses.
As the Bureau marks its six-month milestone, it is clear that the challenge of fighting cyber crime is far from over. However, the successful arrests made by TGCSB provide a hopeful indication of the state’s resolve in curbing this menace and protecting citizens from the growing threat of cyber fraud.
In light of the increasing number of arrests and the diverse profiles of the criminals involved, experts are urging for greater emphasis on cyber literacy and public awareness. Authorities have stressed the importance of teaching digital safety practices and raising awareness about the risks of cyber crime in order to reduce the number of victims and offenders alike.
With the escalating threat of cyber crime, the TGCSB remains committed to strengthening its operations and expanding its reach to combat this growing issue on a national scale.
