9-year-old girl raped in Hyderabad’s Mangalhat

Women-related crimes are on the rise in the city as after the recent rape incident of a 6-year-old girl, reports of another minor getting raped surfaced today. The accused was later arrested by the police.

The incident took place on Wednesday night when the victim’s parents were not at home. The crime, allegedly carried out by a 19-year-old man, took place in Hyderabad’s Mangalhat area.

The accused is a resident of Afzalsagar near Mallepally. Working as a band worker, the teenager is an alcohol and marijuana addict, according to the cops.

It started after the victim’s family returned home following Ganesh idol immersion on Wednesday night. The girl’s father began fighting with her mother over an issue when he proceeded to hit the woman. The mother left home to inform the police about it, following which, the father was summoned in the police station. While the parents were getting counselled, their children were alone at home as they were sleeping.

The victim woke up from her sleep and started searching for her parents at midnight. When she went out to find them, Sumeeth (the suspect) noticed and lured her into a deserted area at around 1 am on the pretext of helping the girl find her parents. He raped the 9-year-old and fled the spot when she started shouting for help.

The child’s screams were heard by neighbours who immediately went to help her. They found her in the secluded area and rescued her. When the parents returned from Habeeb Nagar police station, they were informed of the incident. They then rushed to the Mangalhat police station to file a complaint.

Following the registration of the case, the police began their investigation. Special teams were formed to probe the matter and gather information related to Sumeeth. CCTV clips showed the suspect and his movements, based on which, he was nabbed and taken under arrest on Thursday night.

This comes only a week after the rape and murder case of a 6-year-old girl in Saidabad. The child was raped and murdered by her neighbour who lured her with chocolates. The bereaved family and neighbours had protested to hand over the accused to them. While there were earlier reports of the 30-year-old man getting arrested, it later came to light that he was absconding.

The police had declared prize money of Rs 10,00,000 for anyone who would give information about the accused and his location that could lead to his arrest. However, he was found dead on the railway tracks in Warrangal, about 120 km away from Hyderabad. It hasn’t yet been confirmed if he died due to suicide, murder or an accident with the train, the police said.
