Agnipath Scheme: A Jangaon aspirant attempts suicide due to fear of arrest

During the protests at the Secunderabad railway station in the district, an Agnipath aspirant attempted suicide over the fear of being arrested.

As it is recalled, hundreds of youth set fire to several railway bogeys and damaged public property at Secunderabad railway station on June 17. Several cases were registered under various sections against the protesters by the police.

During the investigation into the Secunderabad arson, the youth identified as Govind Ajay consumed a poisonous substance in Kottapalli village in Ghanpur mandal of Jangaon while law enforcement authorities collected substantial evidence against the protesters. He is receiving treatment at a private hospital after being rushed there by his parents.

According to reports, Ajay spoke with a TV station during the protest, and the Ghanpur police approached him after the incident. Police said he would be questioned again even though no charges were filed against him.

In response to the police leaving, Ajay went into depression for three days and decided to commit suicide because he was afraid of a police case being brought against him, which could have harmed his career.

Upon receiving a WhatsApp message about the protest, Ajay went there. The Army Physical Test was passed by Ajay, and he was looking forward to the written exam. When he applied for the Army, he also applied for a position as a police constable. While speaking from the hospital, Ajay said that he attempted suicide for fear of being prosecuted for participating in the protest and thus preventing him from getting employment in the military.

What is Agnipath Scheme?

As of 14 June 2022, the Government of India introduced the Agnipath Scheme to recruit soldiers below the rank of commissioned officers into the three military services. Military recruitment will only be possible through the Agnipath Scheme.

All recruits will be hired for a four-year term only. Personnel recruited through this system will be known as Agniveers, a new military rank. The scheme’s implementation has been criticized for a lack of consultation and public debate. The scheme is set to go into effect in September 2022.
