Animal Care Centre help Badangpet municipality fend off dog attacks

With a view to tackle the issue of stray dog attacks being reported from different areas, the Badangpet Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Maheshwaram has established an ‘Stray Animal Care Centre’ that helps people get rid of canine attacks especially in summer season.

Spread over an area of 1200 square yards in a completely isolated place away from residential habitations, this centre is a home to around 60 to 65 stray dogs caught and shifted to the facility from different areas of the municipality.

Spending a fund to the tune of Rs.40 lakhs, the centre was established only last year with a facility of operation theatre and manned by half-a-dozen staff members besides a veterinary doctor who was assigned to keep track of the health of the canines while the staff members take care of the food being regularly served to these stray animals.

“A multi level cage system was built in the centre to keep the stray dogs safe from all types of weather. Food and water is being provided to these stray animals with every interval while the veterinary doctor attends them when the medical emergency arrives. A stray animals catching van was also provided at the facility to attend the complaints of dog menace,” informed Krishna Mohan Reddy, Commissioner Badangpet Municipal Corporation.

Inaugurated by Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy last year, this Stray Animal Care Centre is first of its kind in Maheshwaram constituency that arguably solve the cases of stray dog attacks and comes as a sigh of relief for the people of surrounding areas who until now were found complaining about stray dog menace.

Mahesh, a local resident said that “Most of the time the municipal staff, especially the sanitation team was found struggling to keep the dogs safe after catching them from different localities due to absence of such a facility. However, the rescue centre is now helping them to address the complaints regarding stray dog attacks from different areas.”

Unfortunately, Badangpet Municipal Corporation is located next to Jalpally municipality from where most of the cases of stray dog attacks were reported while no such Animal Rescue Centre was found available there to rescue the local people facing the dog bite menace especially during the summer season.
