Apple users can now migrate WhatsApp chats to Telegram in the latest update

In its latest update for Apple users, Telegram allows migration of WhatsApp chat history to Telegram. The migrated chats will be marked as “imported” to indicate that they have been migrated from another app and will show up alongside the Telegram chats. Besides WhatsApp, the latest update also allows migrating chats from other instant messenger apps such as Line and KakaoTalk.

However, it may be noted that the new migration feature is not available to all Apple users yet. Reportedly, Telegram has removed mention of the new migration feature in a changelog suggesting that it might not be fully stable yet. While migrating chats, it is critical to ensure that the contact for whom you are migrating the chat is also an active user on Telegram.

Step-by-step process to migrate WhatsApp chat history to Telegram for iOS users:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the particular chat that you wish to migrate;
  • Navigate to the “More” menu and select “Export chat”;
  • A zip file will then be created with the entire chat history of that conversation.
  • Once the zip file is created, iOS users can import the zip file into their Telegram app using the iOS share sheet
  • Telegram will then ask users which contact they would like to import the messages to, where users can select the same contact from which they imported from.

The users will have to repeat this process for each contact’s chat history that they wish to import to Telegram and there is no option for bulk import available yet.

Although the new feature has not been officially announced, a number of Telegram users have been able to access the feature in the latest Telegram update via the App Store. Further, no such update has been announced for the app’s Android users. For now, Android users will just have to wait and see if they get the feature.

Prior to Telegram, Signal had provided this feature to transfer WhatsApp chat history to its platform. Both Signal and Telegram have witnessed a huge surge in the number of users following updates in the Privacy policy rolled out by WhatsApp earlier this month. WhatsApp has been facing huge backlash and criticism over social media and even by the government overs its mandatory privacy policy updated forced on WhatsApp users.
