Bandi Sanjay targets opposition over controversy surrounding Charminar

The Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Thursday targeted Congress, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s (TRS) and AIMIM over the controversy surrounding Charminar, saying that these parties have an internal understanding and are seeking votes from minorities.

After Rashid Khan launched a signature campaign on Tuesday calling for a sit-in protest at the Charminar in Hyderabad, Sanjay made this statement.

Congress and TRS have an internal understanding, said the BJP chief in a statement to the media. The AIMIM party is with the TRS party, so they need to do something sensational to gain votes from the minority, he said.

He had also accused AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi of using his Muslim minority as a vote bank.

“We have never called for the removal of Charminar. A meeting was held at the Charminar and prayers were offered at the Bhagyalakshmi temple. It has always been our desire to develop the old city. In order to increase his assets and preserve his assets, Owaisi is using his Muslim minority as a vote bank and has not developed the old city,” he said.

When Rashid Khan started the sit-in to demand that the Charminar be opened for prayers, Sanjay commented, “Today suddenly you remember Namaz there, since I started padayatra at Bhagyalakshmi Temple, there’s a very powerful goddess there. That’s how you sparked the Namaz issue.”

“If Namaz were to be held there in the beginning, we would not object. Even the Muslim community will not forgive you if you plan to do Namaz as a competition,” he said.

Rashid Khan had previously said that Muslims were able to offer prayers at the Charminar, an Archeological Survey of India protected site, however, Muslims were debarred from offering prayers at the site two decades ago.
