Bihar floods- Woman gives birth to baby on rescue boat

Due to the incessant rains, people are getting lashed out from their houses in Bihar. The rains don’t seem to stop and so does the misery of the residents who are stranded in flooded areas. In a shocking incident, a woman delivered a baby girl while getting transported to a safer place in the NDRF rescue boat.

According to officials, the incident took place on Sunday while the woman and others were being ferried amid the Burhi Gandak river of the flooded Bihar.

The pregnant woman was a resident of Gobari village of East Champaran district. She was trapped in her home due to the floods and was rescued by the NDRF team. While journeying on the ferry, she developed intense labor pains and at 1.40 in the afternoon, gave birth to a baby girl.

An NDRF representative said in Delhi that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team received help from an ASHA (accredited social health activist) worker for aiding in the delivery. The worker was accompanying the team on the rescue boat.

The spokesperson said that the team from the 9th battalion of the NDRF had received news of a man drowning in the floodwaters. They were then informed of a stranded pregnant woman whose village was engulfed by the water due to the rains.

He stated that after the delivery, the mother and child were taken to a healthcare center and are doing fine.

“The mother and the newborn girl have been shifted to a public health facility in Banjariya village of Motihari district by an ambulance and their condition is stated to be stable,” he said.

The spokesperson said NDRF personnel are trained in the medical first responder course and all rescuers are taught handling of childbirth during an emergency.

“This is the 10th childbirth (including a case of twins) on an NDRF boat while evacuating expecting mothers from flood-hit areas since the year 2013,” the spokesperson said.

Bihar deployed 21 NDRF teams to help in the rescue operations in the flood-hit districts of the state.

Zee News reported that as per Friday, the floods had snatched at least 10 lives, affecting a million people. Bihar government said that the repair and reconstruction process could be started to post the reduction in the intensity of the rains which can take up to 2-3 days.

The Indian Air Force has also been requested for help to air-drop the food supplies for people marooned in the affected areas. Around 94 lakh people have been evacuated from the region and 12,000 are placed in relief camps.

Trains from Suvauli and Narkatigunj have been suspended until further notice due to the rains. Routes of another 6 trains have also been changed.
