BJP Requests Meeting with LG for Newly Elected MLAs Following Delhi Assembly Victory

A day after securing a massive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  sought an appointment for a meeting between its newly elected MLAs and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena. Delhi BJP president, Virendra Sachdeva, wrote a letter to the Lieutenant Governor requesting a meeting with the 48 newly elected BJP MLAs and the seven Lok Sabha MPs from the city. The letter also emphasized that the party leadership wished to meet at the earliest, according to the LG’s convenience.

Along with the formal request for a meeting, BJP candidates celebrated their electoral success with thanksgiving rallies across their respective constituencies. Winning candidates distributed sweets, cut cakes, and personally thanked voters for their support. In Moti Nagar, MLA-elect Harish Khurana led a rally and assured the public that he would focus on addressing issues like public toilets and water supply. Similarly, Satish Upadhyay, elected from Malviya Nagar, led a victory procession where supporters danced to drumbeats and he also visited a temple.

Among the most significant victories was that of Parvesh Verma, who emerged as the BJP’s “giant killer” by defeating Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Verma distributed sweets and celebrated his victory with voters, feeding sweets to children and passersby.

BJP MLA-elect from Rajouri Garden, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, attributed the party’s success to the people’s trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that Delhi’s electorate had rejected false promises and opted for development under Modi’s leadership. In Jangpura, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, who won the seat, accused rival parties of trying to influence voters with money, but stated that people trusted Modi’s guarantee and voted accordingly.

The BJP’s resounding victory ends the Aam Aadmi Party’s decade-long dominance in Delhi, signaling a shift in public sentiment after the party had faced losses in the 2015 and 2020 elections. The AAP, which had been led by Arvind Kejriwal, only managed to secure 22 of the 70 assembly seats, while the Congress drew a blank.

With the BJP winning a strong mandate, discussions about the formation of a new government have begun. The buzz over who will be the new Chief Minister of Delhi has intensified, with several names from the victorious leaders being speculated for the top post. BJP leaders hinted that the formation of the government is likely to take place after Prime Minister Modi returns from his foreign visit.

The BJP’s victory marks a new phase in Delhi politics, as the party aims to implement its vision for the city and move away from the Kejriwal-led governance era.
