Boats and houses set ablaze amid political riots in Tamil Nadu

What started as a political dispute, resulted in district violence along with the murder of a man, according to the police in cuddalore town.

Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district witnessed a violent clash following the murder of a man on Saturday. The deceased man is told to be the brother of a local body’s leader.

The incident, which took place in the Thalanguda village, involved the accused setting fire to 25 fishing boats and several two-wheelers parked near the shore. Video recordings of the incident have been recovered from people who were present at that time.

In regards to the same, over 50 people have been arrested by the cops of Cuddalore reported Times of India.

The videos show panicked individuals and firefighters trying to put off the fire by throwing sand on the boats as the fire engines weren’t able to go further near the shore. Helpless owners of the boats and other properties stand terrified and utterly broken at the sight of their source of income turning into ashes. The aftermath of the fire saw burnt boats, vehicles and other things. No loss of human life pertaining to the fire incident has been reported till now.

According to other reports, many huts and houses were also set ablaze amid the clashes which have been ongoing for 3 weeks now. Eye-witnesses said that the attackers ignited the places and escaped soon after. These attackers were identified by the police and more than 50 detained.

The police say that the recent murder and this incident resulted due to the political feud since the local elections held last year. The panchayat union polls were held in December of 2019 in nearly the entire Tamil Nadu, marking a delay of over 3 years. Two competitor parties got involved in violent acts due to the same and led to the murder of the local body leader.

Massive numbers of police personnel are present in the area to maintain law and order after the violent crime. The cops reportedly told NDTV that the matter at Cuddalore is under control and tight security is being given in the associated region.

M SreeAbhinav, SP of Cuddalore said, “Boats and two-wheelers were set on fire. Previous enmity between both groups appears to be the root cause. We’ve deployed adequate police force and the situation is under control.”

Since the commencement of the coronavirus induced lockdown in the state, this presents as the first case of vehemence of rivalry between the two parties involved.
