Centre to celebrate Telangana Formation Day with Amit Shah in attendance

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s entry into national politics has proven to have unsettled the BJP government at the Centre, which on Monday announced that Telangana Formation Day will be officially celebrated on June 2 in New Delhi.

This year’s programme, which marks India’s youngest state’s eighth anniversary, is intended to showcase the roots of the land of culture, heritage, architectural splendour and unsung heroes.

In attendance will be Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the celebrations organized by the Ministry of Culture at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre.

Since the BJP government failed to even think of organizing a similar event during the last eight years of Telangana’s existence, it’s evident the unexpected move is politically motivated.

Following Chandrashekhar Rao’s active efforts to develop an alternative development agenda in collaboration with like-minded parties and leaders ahead of the 2024 general elections, political experts believe the BJP perceives Rao as an important threat to its apparent political dominance.

Political circles with divergent views were sparked by the BJP government’s unexpected decision.

Whether the saffron party took note of Chandrashekhar Rao’s efforts to form a non-BJP coalition is up for debate, while others believe it was a last-ditch bid to appease Telangana’s citizens who have been ill-treated by the Centre on all fronts including sanctioning projects and releasing funds.

“Under the guise of Telangana Formation Day celebrations, efforts are being made to promote the sentiment that the BJP is indeed concerned about Telangana. However, only time will tell whether these efforts will succeed,” a political analyst said.

In celebration, popular Telangana singers like Mangali and Vedala Hemachandra will perform. Telangana folk artists will also perform. Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, will also attend the event.
