Centre’s Ban on PFI Cannot Be Supported: Owaisi

As per the latest reports, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said on Wednesday that the Centre’s ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) cannot be supported and questioned why the government has not banned right-wing majoritarian organizations.

The Hyderabad MP stated that while he has always opposed the approach of PFI and supported the democratic approach, he cannot support the ban on PFI.

The president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) believes that such a draconian ban is dangerous because it prohibits any Muslim from speaking out. Owaisi took to Twitter and wrote: The way India’s electoral autarky is approaching fascism, every Muslim youth will now be arrested with a PFI pamphlet under India’s black law, UAPA.

He asked how come PFI is banned but organizations associated with Khaja Ajmeri bomb blast convicts are not Why hasn’t the government banned right-wing majoritarian organizations, he further said.

He stated that the actions of some individuals who commit crimes do not require the organization itself to be banned. He emphasized that the Supreme Court has also ruled that mere membership with an organization is insufficient to convict someone.

He also wrote: Muslims have spent decades in prison before being acquitted by courts. I have opposed UAPA & will always oppose all actions under UAPA. It runs afoul of the principle of liberty, which is part of the basic structure of the constitution.

He added: We should remember that Congress amended UAPA to make it stringent & when BJP amended the law to make it even more draconian, Congress supported it. This case will follow the timeline of Kappan, where any activist or journalist is randomly arrested & takes 2 years to even get bail.

The NIA on Tuesday searched 93 locations across 15 Indian states. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Bihar, and Manipur, over 100 activists were arrested. The NIA arrested 106 people associated with PFI earlier this month.
