Challan discount offer nets Hyderabad police Rs 300 crore

On April 15, the one-time discount for pending challans ended state-wide. With the campaign beginning on March 1, the initiative resulted in over 3 crore challans being cleared by motorists, with fines amounting to close to Rs 1,004 crore. A total of Rs 303 crore was collected by the state.

Over 65 per cent of car owners settled their challans at the Hyderabad Commissionerate, according to A V Ranganath, Joint Director of the Hyderabad Traffic Police.

He said, “The Hyderabad Commissionerate has the highest collection rates. There have been a large number of challans cleared in the entire state. I’m glad that so many people came forward to clear their long-due challans. Going forward, we’ll be more strict. We will ensure that any vehicle owner with a pending challan pays it as soon as possible.”

The Hyderabad Traffic Police explained that this decision was made due to the severe economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-time discount offer originally applied only to Rachakonda and Hyderabad Traffic Police. A last-minute agreement led the state to join the proposal.

Originally planned to conclude on March 31, the campaign was extended by 15 days. State Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali had extended the deadline by 15 days.

The discount offer included a substantial portion of the due amount being waived off. As of March 31, 2.4 crore challans valued at Rs 250 crore had been cleared. On April 15th, the total revenue collected from over 3 crore challans exceeded Rs 300 crore.

On March 1, a massive Rs. 5.5 crore was collected by the Hyderabad tri-commissionerate region as a result of the city police’s “one-time” discount offer.

It was estimated that at least 1,000 challans were cleared every minute on the first day.
