Congress, MBT leaders placed under house arrest following demolition of Masjid-e-Khaja

As they planned to hold prayers at the site of the Masjid-e-Khaja Mahmood before it was demolished, Congress leaders, Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), Tehreek Muslimeem Shabban, and other groups were unofficially kept under house arrest by Hyderabad police.

With a heavy police presence, the Shamshabad Municipal Corporation bulldozed the mosque at Shamshabad earlier this week. AIMIM MLA Kauser Mohiuddin, who represents the Telangana government, demanded action on Thursday against officials who demolished Masjid-e Khaja Mahmood after the political leaders are being kept under house arrest.

The AIMIM leader had also stated that the public and leaders would attend the ‘Namaz-e-Juma’ at the site where Masjid-e-Khaja had been before being demolished.

After receiving reports that a clash was going to break out between AIMIM party leaders and others, the police in Cyberabad sought help from their counterparts in Hyderabad and put Congress leaders Abdullah Sohail and Rasheed Khan, MBT spokeswoman Amjedullah Khan, and Tahreek Muslim Shabban president Mohd Mushtaq Malik under unofficial house arrest.

A protest against the demolition of Masjid-e-Khaja was staged earlier this week by Congress leaders, MBT, and TMS. On Wednesday, Shamshabad witnessed a massive rally. Additionally, AIMIM protested at the Shamshabad Municipal Office and the Ranga Reddy district collector’s office at Lakdikapul.

On Friday, there was a heavy police presence in Shamshabad. A police station in riot gear has been set up along the road leading to the demolition site of Masjid-e-Khaja in Green Park Avenue colony Shamshabad. The situation is being reviewed by senior police officials at Shamshabad Police Station.

In Shamshabad, tensions have been high for the past two days, with heavy police deployment. A protest took place outside the Shamshabad municipality office where several politicians and Muslim organizations gathered. A preventive arrest was made by the police. AIMIM MLA Kauser Mohiuddin sat on a dharna on Wednesday at the Ranga Reddy collector office building in Lakdikapul. Along with party workers, he was taken into preventive custody.
