Covaxin Receives Approval from DGCI For Trial on 2-18 Years Volunteers

Amidst the rising cases of India and experts warning for the third wave of Covid 19 to be more harmful for children, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given the permission to conduct the Phase II-III trial of Covaxin (Covid Vaccine) for the age of 2 years and 18 years.

Union Health Ministry Allows Bharat Biotech To Conduct Vaccine Trials 

The Union Health Ministry has given permission to Bharat Biotech Ltd, to conduct Phase II-III of the Covaxin for minors. The trial will be conducted on 525 healthy volunteers.

During the trial, the vaccine will be given by intramuscular route in two doses at day 0 and at day 28.

This comes after carefully examining the recommendation by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC). The national drug regulator of the country gave the approval for clinical trials for the youngest age group.

Bharat Biotech International Ltd (BBIL) proposed to carry out the Phase II-III clinical trial of Covaxin for the younger age groups. The proposal was deliberated by the SEC on May 11 this year. And after detailed deliberation SEC granted the permission.

Covaxin is a collaborative work between Bharat Biotech with the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Institute of Virology.

Virologist Warns Third Wave of Coronavirus to be Dangerous for Children 

Dr Ravi from NIMHANS Bengaluru predicted that the third wave of Coronavirus is likely to attack the children. The Maharashtra government has created a task force to manage Covid 19 infected children during the third wave.

Reports suggest that the Covid virus mutates and attacks the new hosts. The first wave attacked mainly the elderly and some youngsters. The second wave of Covid 19 attacked largely the younger population. Following the same, the third wave of coronavirus is likely to hit the children as many adults have already been infected or immunised.
