Cyclone Burevi: Shah Talks to TN, Kerala CMs, Guarantees Support

New Delhi: Cyclone Burevi is possible to make landfall in the mainland between Kanyakumari and Pamban in south Tamil Nadu on Friday. The heavy depression which will strengthen into a cyclone on Tuesday night will cross the Sri Lanka coast on Wednesday and make its way towards the Kanyakumari region.

The course is probably going to take after arriving at the mainland could be followed by Wednesday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday talked with Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the wake of Cyclone Burevi and guaranteed them all the possible help from the Centre.

Shah said in a tweet that: “Have spoken to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan in the wake of Cyclone Burevi.”  He added: “(Narendra) Modi government is committed for all possible support to help people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Several teams of NDRF are already deployed in both states.”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that the cyclonic storm Burevi is expected to cross the south Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanyakumari during December 3 and 4 with a wind speed of 70-80 kph, gusting at 90 kph.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the state was on a high alert taking into account Cyclone Burevi.

As indicated by India Meteorological Department, the heavy depression over the southwest and bordering the southeast Bay of Bengal lay centered over the southwest Bay of Bengal, around 460 km east-southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and 860 km east-southeast of Kanyakumari on Tuesday.

It is extremely likely to strengthen further into a cyclonic storm during the following 12 hours. It is probably going to move west-northwestwards and pass the Sri Lanka coast near Trincomalee on Wednesday night or evening as a cyclonic storm with a breeze speed of 75-85 kph blasting to 95 kph.

At that point, it is probably going to move almost westwards from there on, emerge into the Gulf of Mannar, and connecting the Kanyakumari region on Thursday morning. It would then move west-south-westwards and pass south Tamil Nadu coast among Kanyakumari and Pamban around the early morning of Friday.

Kerala is keeping its fingers crossed for as it is yet to know what direction the cyclone will move to the Arabian Sea.
