Cyclone Nivar: Affected Andhra Districts Receive Almost 188% Excess Rainfall

Amaravati: Rayalaseema, Nellore, and Prakasam districts in Andhra Pradesh endured the brunt of the extremely severe cyclonic storm Nivar in the previous four days, receiving nearly 188 per cent excess rainfall.

An official said that because of the heavy rains that battered the state between November 23-26 over 10,000 people are taking shelter in 147 relief camps.

As indicated by preliminary reports, the state government assessed that crop losses happened in 30,000 hectares in Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Prakasam districts.

Upwards of 16,290 hectares of paddy fields, black gram (7,362), cotton (3,571) and different crops (2,529) were harmed in the Nivar rains.

Similarly, many locations faced power interruptions, including 180 km length of streets  damaged.

He said that inundated houses were recorded as 664 while damaged houses were 673.

In the interim, Agriculture Minister Kurasala Kannababu said impacted individuals taking shelter in the relief camps will be given Rs 500 each while they get back home.

The state government will likewise give an 80 per cent subsidy on seeds to farmers in the impacted region. Ex-gratia and pay concerning the loss of human life and damage to property would be paid following rules.

Kannababu said the public authority has been giving input subsidy in the same season. For crop damage among June and September, the subsidy was paid in October and for October crop loss, it was given in November.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy guided authorities to stay alert, giving all assistance to individuals taking shelter in the relief camps.

He additionally directed them to restore power supply and fix the damaged streets on a war footing.

He advised officials to give ex-gratia to the kin of individuals who passed away in the heavy rains.

On Friday, Chittoor police saved six individuals stranded near a river.

An official stated: “Six stranded citizens on the other side of the Pintcha river were ziplined to safety with the help of SDRF, NDRF and Chittoor police.”

Five women caught in flooding water from a canal in Kadapa district shouted for help were saved by two police officers, Obulesh and Tirupatiaiah, who were on the duty close by.

Tragically, the third farmer who was waiting to be rescued by Tirupati police after being stuck on a tree in the overflowing Mallimadugu canal was discovered dead on Thursday after being washed away.
