Dalit man and family mob lynched, counter-case filed by accused persons

Karnataka: The world has entered the 21st century, but some people are perhaps still living in the 19th or 20th one. In a viral video shared by users on social media, a Dalit man is seen being lynched by an angry mob for allegedly “touching the bike of a man of upper caste” in Karnataka.

The incident took place on Saturday, 18th July in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka, which is about 530 km from the capital city, Bengaluru, according to the complaint filed in the police station. The man, a Dalit, and his family were mob lynched and beaten with sticks and kicked on the back after the crowd got furious.

The video shows the some people pinning him to the ground while the others hit him with sticks. After suffering the inhuman act, the man, along with his family reached the police station in the area to inform the incident. The 32 year old Dalit man filed a complaint which mentioned that he was stripped and thrashed with his family on Saturday by the angry mob as he touched an item which was under the ownership of man belonging to the “upper caste.”

In a turn of events, the accused people retaliated on the complaint and registered a counter case saying that the man “stripped his own clothes and started making obscene gestures, exposing his private parts, at two girls who were washing clothes nearby.”

The case of assault and the counter case were registered by the police.

Senior police officer, Anupam Aggarwal said, “An atrocity case was reported in Talikote on Saturday about assault on the Dalit Man from Minaji village. It was alleged that when he accidentally touched the bike of a man who belonged to the upper caste that he and his family members were assaulted by some 13 men.”

The victims included the names of 13 people who were a part of this inhumanity in the police complaint. Later, some of these accused for the assault were called to the police station for interrogation. Giving to the violation of Indian laws against SC/ST, the police registered a case under its Act and sections 143,147, 324, 354, 504, 506, 149 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Furthermore, Mr. Aggarwal added that upon reaching the crime location, they heard another story pertaining to the incident due to which they had to file a counter-case.

“When an investigation team reached the site of the incident today, they were told that the 32-year-old was beaten up when he took out his clothes and started showing his private parts to two girls who were washing clothes. We have registered a counter case under section 354 of the IPC,” the senior officer said.

While the world is being urged every single day to maintain as much social distancing as possible to curb the spread of the deadly virus, the video surfaced shows the crowd of men staying as close as possible to each other and violating all the norms while showering the family with blows. Most of the men in it can be seen without any mask, leave alone the social distancing rules. It is almost like no variant of virus can stop them from hitting an innocent man, just for the fact that he is a Dalit.

Even after the demolition of the caste system in 1950, the practice of “untouchability” is still very much prevalent in the rural parts of India.

Karnataka has risen to become the fourth worst hit state in the country in the tallies of coronavirus cases. On Sunday, its highest single day surge was noted with 4,000 new infections contributing to make the total number of cases to 63,772.
