Donald Trump to Continue COVID-19 Relief Bill after Elections

Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he is finishing negotiations over a COVID-19 relief bill, and will only continue talks after the political election.

As reported by BBC, he tweeted a day after leaving hospital: “Immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans.”

Discussions regarding budget between Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had been in progress.

Stock markets of US quickly fell following Trump’s announcement.

It comes as cases ascend in a few sections of the nation, and the outbreak hits top Pentagon military authorities, Republican congresspersons and White House staff.

Officials from the two parties had wished after another round of COVID-19 relief bill spending to move ahead of the November 3 political election, yet Trump’s tweet seems to have unexpectedly suspended that prospect.

In his tweet, the president cast fault for the discussions’ breakdown on Pelosi, saying that she was seeking for $2.4tr (?1.8tr) “to bail out badly run, high crime, Democrat States”.

He said he counter-offered $1.6tr (?1.2tr) yet Pelosi “is not negotiating in good faith”.

He wrote: “I am declining their request, and looking to the future of the nation.”

He included that he had directed Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to concentrate efforts on confirming his Supreme Court candidate Amy Coney Barrett.

Trump was blamed by Pelosi for “putting himself first at the expense of the country”.

She included: “He shows his contempt for science, his disdain for our heroes… and he refuses to put money in workers’ pockets unless his name is printed on the cheque.”

Pelosi said the president “is married” to a $150bn tax cut for the rich, yet won’t help helpless children.

Calling on Trump officials to heed Powell’s advice, she stated: “Clearly, the White House is in complete disarray.”
