DPH Urges Parents to Vaccinate Their Children as Schools Set to Reopen

Several senior health officials here on Friday said that the imminent reopening of schools in Telangana, as well as the ongoing Covid outbreaks in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri, must convince parents of children aged 12 to 18 to administer them with Covid vaccinations.

Within the next few weeks, schools will be reopened, and it would be difficult to convince children to wear masks during school hours. Schools are always at risk for the spread of Covid infections due to the steady rise of Covid infections.

“It is an ideal time for parents to get their children vaccinated with Covid vaccines,” Director of Public Health (DPH) Dr G Srinivasa Rao said on Friday.

Currently, in Telangana, about 92 per cent of eligible adolescents aged 15 to 17 have received the first Covid dose, while 82 per cent have received the second dose.

In the 12 to 14 years category, about 89 per cent of the eligible children have received the first dose while 54 per cent have received the second dose of the Covid vaccine.

The DPH has urged private schools in Hyderabad to take the lead and contact the health authorities to have vaccine mela carried out on school grounds.

“If school managements in Hyderabad can persuade parents and children to participate in the vaccine drive, our medical teams will visit the school campus and conduct the vaccination drive free of charge. While almost all eligible individuals have already received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine, children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years have yet to receive the vaccines,” DPH said.

On a day when the State reported 155 new cases of Covid-19 and vaccination status, DPH told the media that the use of face masks has become mandatory and there will also be fines if anyone violates the rules.
