Assam Elections Receive Nominations From Jailed Candidate

In a recent development from the Assam Elections, a jailed peasant leader named Akhil Gogoi has filed for his nomination from the Sibsagar Constituency. He earlier did announce his nomination but at that time it was from Mariani.

Gogoi has been in the police custody since December 2019. He was arrested during the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. He will be contesting elections under the Raijor Dal which is a newly formed regional party. It is an alliance of the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

Sibsagar is an important constituency in Assam. It is located in the Upper Assam and was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi had earlier addressed their campaign rallies in Sibsagar.

The constituency comes with  Sivasagar town and many other rural pockets. Over 50 percent of the voters in the area are Ahoms and 20 percent are Caste Assamese voters. Around 15 percent are Muslims.

Congress has ruled that area for a very long time. The constituency also was a strong hand for the Communist Party of India (CPI). However, in the last elections Bharatiya Janata Party won the seats.

While there have been questions and growing concerns if Gogoi would be able to compete against larger parties like BJP and Congress. A young group of men claimed that the Gogoi is reportedly in jail because he had the capability to sway both the parties.
