In a heart-wrenching incident, a family of four, including two young children, was found dead in their rented home in the RMV Second Stage area of Bengaluru morning. The police suspect that a combination of financial difficulties, a prolonged legal battle over a land dispute, and the challenges of raising a child with a disability may have led the family to take this extreme step.
The deceased were identified as Anup Kumar, 38, his wife Rakhi, 35, their five-year-old daughter, and two-year-old son. Originally from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, the family had been residing in Bengaluru for the past two years. Kumar, a software consultant, had resigned from his job 45 days ago and was reportedly planning to relocate to Pune.
According to investigators, Kumar may have smothered or poisoned his children before dying by suicide with his wife. An email sent by Kumar to his brother shortly before the incident reportedly detailed their struggles, including a lack of support from his parents during their challenging times. The police believe the deaths occurred between 4 am and 5 am on Monday.

The family’s house help discovered the tragedy when she arrived for work in the morning. “I rang the bell, but no one answered. When I knocked, the door opened. As I stepped inside, I found Kumar’s body. I immediately informed the neighbors and called the police,” she said.
The family had been dealing with significant stress. Kumar was embroiled in a five-to-six-year legal battle over a land dispute in which he was allegedly cheated. Chandrika, a close friend of the family, revealed that this ongoing issue, coupled with the challenges of caring for their intellectually disabled daughter, may have taken a heavy toll on them. “He last called me on Friday, and it was a casual conversation. I didn’t notice anything unusual,” she said.
The family’s son’s caretaker, Reshma, who worked for them for two years, expressed her shock at the incident. “They were a loving and protective family. On Sunday evening, I helped Rakhi pack for their planned trip to Pondicherry. They seemed fine. I never imagined this would happen,” she said.
Police have registered a case and are investigating further. The email Kumar sent to his brother will be examined as part of the inquiry. Neighbors and friends are reeling from the shock of the tragedy, which underscores the devastating impact of unresolved financial and emotional issues.
