Former UNEP chief praises the greenery along the Mehdipatnam-Narsingi road

In recognition of its efforts to increase the greenery in the city, the State Government has received praise from former UN Environment Programme Director and former Norwegian Environment Minister Erik Solheim.

Solheim tweeted pictures of greenery along the road at Mehdipatnam, Langer Houz, Tippu Khan Bridge, and Ramdev Guda – Narsingi, writing: “The greening of Telangana!” Transformation of 10 km Mehdipatnam-Narsingi Road with Plantation in Central Median & along margins. In just 2 years the road is now a visual treat with an enjoyable ride for commuters. Beautiful!”

It is not the first time Solheim has made global audiences aware of Telangana’s greenery initiatives on Twitter.

Earlier this year, he also praised the efforts of the State government to translocate 100-year-old neem trees to the KCR Eco Park without harming Mother Nature. He also noted that Telangana is a global front runner when it comes to increasing its tree cover.

Haritha Haram programme

It is also worth noting that the government had launched a program to expand greenery, called ‘Haritha Haram’. The green drive took place in villages, mandals, and rural areas in many phases.

KTR said that the greenery in the city and forest is entirely due to the efforts of the CM. According to the minister, the government offers budget funds to increase greenery in phases. Official machinery is involved in the “Haritha Haram” program, he said.

The State government has reportedly set a target of 19.5 crore plantations this year. Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has instructed responsible officials to take up plantation drives under the Haritha Haram programme in a big way.

Somesh Kumar has instructed his officials to devise a special afforestation plan in districts with less than a 10 per cent green cover. In addition, every mandal should be set up with four Bruhat Palle Prakruthi Vanams.
