GHMC officials targeting eateries violating food safety regulations

Following complaints about the quality of food served at several hotels, restaurants, and food centres in the city, which is a major concern, officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) launched field inspections of city eateries to look for adulteration and other illegal practises. Several mobile teams of Food Safety Officers and Assistant Medical Officers of Health officials inspected various hotels in the city in preparation for Ramzan.

Health-conscious customers have lodged complaints against hotels, particularly small hotels and fast food outlets whose surroundings are completely unsanitary and serve stale food.

Following the publication of the report and increasing complaints about the quality of food served, officials pulled up their socks and began field investigations across the city.

According to the Food Safety Wing, the GHMC has appealed to hoteliers and hotel management to take precautionary measures and ensure certain specified standards in food preparation, hygiene, and strictly following the guidelines issued by the GHMC to take all public safety measures.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi met with Food Safety Department officials on Monday and instructed them to check food items and collect samples from all eateries, including street food stalls, hotels, and restaurants. She directed them to submit a daily report of the food safety officials’ daily inspections and samples.

Soumya Reddy, the Food Safety Officer, stated that officials tested the food items sold by eateries, particularly street vendors, at the field level and made the street vendors aware of the necessary instructions for maintaining quality and hygiene.

“The street vendors were made aware to prepare the food items in a clean environment, and there is no adulteration in the quality. They were directed not to throw garbage on the roads or in front of the hotels. Also instructed eateries to segregate the dry and wet waste separately for easy transportation to the garbage stations,” she added. Furthermore, she stated that after the Ramzan festival, the officers conducted an inspection of hotels, restaurants, and roadside Haleem vendors.

The GHMC has urged hoteliers to adhere to the Food Safety Standards Act of 2006. They were instructed not to install Haleem Bhattis (brick and mud ovens used for preparing Haleem) on top floors of buildings and to maintain proper hygiene and take all precautionary measures while preparing Haleem.

“During inspection, hoteliers and the management of all hotels were directed to take precautionary measures and ensure certain specified standards for the preparation of Haleem.”  In addition to making special hygiene arrangements, hotel and restaurant owners will be urged to obtain meat only from government-approved places to ensure that the meat consumed in hotels is of high quality and healthy.
