GHMC ready to plant and distribute 1.9 cr saplings under Haritha Haram

A total of 1.9 crore saplings have been raised in the 600 nurseries of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in preparation for Telangana Ku Haritha Haram (TKHH) 2022.

Upon the official launch of the programme, these saplings will be planted and distributed.

Several sapling species are grown in the nurseries, including Ashwagandha, Sabja Tulasi, Lavender, and Rose. The details of nurseries and their contact numbers can be found on the website https://greenhyderabad.cgg.gov.in/NurseryList.aspx.

In accordance with the action plan, saplings will be planted along roads and in open spaces. Moreover, dense plantations will be established in temples, educational institutions, playgrounds, parks, crematoriums, and graveyards, as well as in other places that are feasible. In coordination with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), saplings will also be distributed to residents.

It is expected that TKHH 2022 will be officially launched in July, according to a GHMC official.

This State government’s flagship programme, recognized by the United Nations as the third-largest effort for afforestation in the world, will plant 860 km of avenues, including 160 Multi-Layer Avenue Plantation (MLAP).

The upcoming Haritha Haram this year will focus on planting saplings near irrigation projects and canal bunds across the state.

K Chandrashekhar Rao has instructed the officials to explore the possibility of planting saplings in untapped areas.

Among all the afforestation projects in history, Telangana’s Haritha Haram stands out as one of the largest. Over Rs. 8,511 crores has been spent on planting 243 crore saplings in the last eight years. In the State, this resulted in the rejuvenation of 9.65 lakh acres of forest.

The initiatives undertaken as part of Haritha Haram are yielding green results, with the State ranking second in the country for increasing forest cover by 632 square kilometres.

Hyderabad is also the city with the greenest cover in the country with 48.66 square kilometres in a decade.
