The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to modernize city infrastructure by installing state-of-the-art smart poles at strategic locations, aimed at improving public services and enhancing surveillance.
As part of a pilot project, around 100 smart poles will be installed in key areas including the Secretariat and Ameerpet. This initiative, which is expected to improve public safety, communication, and city management, will be undertaken in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
According to a source within GHMC, each smart pole will cost approximately Rs 10 lakh. The project is being implemented to provide a host of services, including CCTV cameras with 360-degree coverage, public address systems, WiFi spots, LED lighting, and weather forecasting services. These features are intended to boost emergency response times and improve overall city management.

The poles will provide real-time surveillance and the live footage will be monitored by GHMC’s command control center. Officials will use this system to enhance their response to various civic issues.
A GHMC official explained, “For instance, if a garbage collection vehicle skips a specific area, the command control team will immediately contact the vehicle operator to address the issue.” Additionally, the CCTV cameras will help identify potholes and other infrastructure problems, allowing for quicker maintenance responses.
This smart pole initiative represents a significant technological advancement for Hyderabad, aiming to enhance the quality of urban living and improve city services. If successful, the pilot project could lead to broader implementation across other areas of the city.
The installation of these smart poles marks GHMC’s commitment to embracing innovation and delivering efficient, technology-driven solutions for Hyderabad’s growing population.
