Keep moving with its drive against construction on Nalas following recent devastating floods especially in old city, the GHMC now took up another task to pull down 93 structures on Shivaji Nagar Nala at Chandryangutta to ensure free flow of storm water into Musi River.

Taking the issue on war footing, the team of GHMC officials visited the nalas on Saturday after sending a proposal for land acquisition last week. It is said that the works to clear 1.5 kilometer long nala will be taken up anytime this week.

“There are a total 93 properties getting affected on this 1.5 kilometers long nala from Sunny Garden to Shivaji Nagar. The Nala that connects to Musi River, is passing through several colonies in Yakutpura area. The present diameter of the nala is 25 feet wide while we are widening it to further 5 feet that accumulates to total 30 feet to allow free flow of the water directly into Musi River,” the sources informed.

The sources added that “A proposal for land acquisition was already sent to the concerned department last week for approval. It is expected that the proposal will get the nod in two or three days paving way for the clearance of the nala by the end of this month.”

Explaining that the team of officials has visited the nala on 7th November, he said, “The estimated cost of the compensation that needs to be approved is around Rs.5 crore to pay structural and land value to the victims of all the 93 properties being affected.”

However, terming the GHMC’s attitude as selective approach in dealing with issues, Kamelakar Jitender, a social activist, said “A Box Drain project to tackle the perennial water logging issue at Pillar No. 191 under PVNR Experssway in Upperpalli is pending since 2018 despite of Rs.20 crores of budget has already been sanctioned for the project that was inaugurated by Minister K.T.Rama Rao itself.”

“Water logging issue here inundates the PVNR Express Way to a length of one kilometer every time the rain lashes the city. The irony is the government even deployed a special deputy collector to clear the hurdle but to no avail. Despite repeated reminders the Box Drain was not yet completed even after two long years,” he rued.
