Woman in Hyderabad duped by an Ivorian posing as an NRI

On a matrimonial website, an Ivory Coast man, 24, posed as an NRI and duped a woman based in the city of 11 lakh.

A native of the Ivory Coast, Amara Fanny, 24, was arrested at his home in Uttam Nagar, Delhi. His associate I K Finich, 32, from Nigeria, who was injured in the attempt to elude police, is currently receiving medical treatment in Delhi and has been issued a notice by police based on Section 41A of the CrPC.

Posing as an NRI, he duped a 28-year-old woman from the city. With fake names, the offenders registered on matrimonial websites and acquired SIM cards with false identifications. A fake NRI profile created by the fraudsters generated interest in the victim, which led them to express willingness to marry her.

The accused had told the victim he was coming to India, and then she received a call from someone claiming to be from Customs Department, who was detaining him as he attempted to bring in foreign currency. While pretending to be paying taxes and getting various clearances, the accused made the victim transfer about 11 lakh to several bank accounts, and then cease all communication.

Police arrested the offender in Delhi a few days ago following a complaint by the victim and brought him to the city as a transit suspect.
