Google To Add More Terms To Their Offensive And Hate Speech Dictionary For Youtube

Amidst the rising conversations about social media hate, Google has blocked several terms with hate speech on YouTube.

Firm Complained Of Racist Terms For Advertisement Placement

As per the reports, a company named The Markup found out that the advertisers were able to search for terms like “White Lives Matter” and “White Power” to promote their reach to more people. They may use it as ad keywords for their Youtube videos.

The report also found that Google was blocking advertisers from using terms like Black Lives Matter for the keywords for their videos and channels. The Markup reached out to Youtube’s parent company Google to comment on the same. They said that they have already blocked a lot of racial and social justice terms. It also includes Black Excellence” and “Civil Rights”.

The spokesperson from Google said that they take the matters of hate speech and harassment very seriously. And they strongly condemn any such action in the strongest terms possible.

The spokesperson also said that they have never let any advertisement run on YouTube which goes with such terms. They have enforced a multi-layered enforcement strategy that constantly works towards the issue.

The spokesperson also ensured that they acknowledge the terms that are offensive and harmful. And they ensure that such terms are not searchable. Their team at work has addressed the issues several times and has blocked terms that violate such policies. The company will continue to be vigilant, said the spokesperson.

Youtube Banned White Supremacist Content In 2019 

Generally, YouTube already has several layers of protection that are in place to ensure that no offensive and harmful advertisement passes through their detection systems. Furthermore, they regularly remove videos that promote hate speech.

As per reports, last year, the company said that they blocked and removed more than 867 million ads that tried to evade their detection systems. In 2019 as well, the company also banned White Supremacist content.
