Gujarat Registers First Case of Marriage Under False Identity; Days After Freedom of Religion Amendment

It’s only been three days since the “Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2021 has come into effect. However, Gujarat has already registered its first case of violation on Thursday.

Vadodara Police Arrests Muslim Man Marrying Hindu Woman 

As per the latest reports, Vadodara police has arrested a Muslim man who was marrying a Hindu woman over a fake identity. He introduced himself a Sam Martin – a Christian.

The accused real name is Samir Abdulbhai Qureshi, 25. He resides in Tarsali area of Vadodara and has been arrested after a complaint was registered against him on Thursday. Hindu woman filed a complaint against Samir for marrying her under the false identity of being a Christian.

SV Chaudhary, Inspector at Vadodara’s Gotri police station spoke to the media regarding the case. He revealed that the Hindu woman (whose identity has not been revealed) filed a complaint against Samir.

Samir reportedly lured her into a relationship by contacting her on Instagram who claimed to be Christian, Sam Martin. She also alleged that he forced her to get into a physical relationship and clicked photographs in those moments. Following which, he threatened her of releasing them online if she didn’t agree to marry him.

SV revealed that Samir and the woman got married in 2019.
DCP Zone 2 Jayrajsinh Vala of Vadodara informed that Samir has been arrested under IPC 376, 377, 504, 506(2) and clause (4) of the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2021.

Forcible Marriage Conversion Illegal Under New Amendment 

The Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2021 came into effect in the state from June 15 after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced it. Under the amendment, forcible conversion by marriage or by getting a person married or even aiding a person to get married is illegal. It will be punishable under the law for 3 to 5 years of prison time and can invite a fine up to Rs 2 lakh,

In case, the victim is a woman, minor, SC, or ST, the offender could be punished with a jail term of 4-7 years and a fine of not less than Rs 3 lakh.
