Gurugram incidents disturbing, won’t expect action from Govt: Puniyani

Expressing concern over unsavory incidents of Gurugram city in Haryana where few Hindu outfits are making hue-and-cry over the peaceful offering of Namaz by the local Muslims, Dr. Ram Puniyani, the renowned historian said, “He is not sure whether the government will take any action against these fringe groups.”

The Hindu outfits are taking law into their hands but the government seems not at all interested in preventing them from spreading hatred in the country. Obviously, incidents of this sort will create polarization of society and the present Government will surely feel that this will be beneficial.

The Hindu outfits are advertently creating hindrance in performing Namaz especially Jumma prayer at open place in Sector-37, of Gurugram city causing great inconvenience for the Muslims.

As the local mosque – which is a consecrated Wakf property, encroached by some vested interests the local people are facing inconvenience in performing the prayer especially during Jumma occasion. As the Muslims are not able to perform Namaz in an encroached mosque and no other mosque is available in the area, they decided to perform the prayer in open by taking permission from the concerned police.

However, unable to digest the same Hindu fringe groups are causing hindrance in peaceful offering of prayer by Muslims using the same old bullying tactic in order to foster the climate of fear in the society. “Infested with Hindu nationalistic ideology, few Hindu outfits like Bharat Mata Vahini, Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti and others are consistently opposing the prayers by Muslims which is quite injurious for our society,” he rued.

To prevent Muslims from offering prayers, he said, the members of these outfits even conducted puja on the site and at one occasion scattered cow dung cakes on the spot. “They even chant slogans like ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ at a time when the Muslims gathered there to perform namaz. These incidents are very disturbing and the society in which we are living together demands a environment of solidarity but unfortunately this sort of unsavory incidents are occurring constantly,”

However, he said, the best part of the pluralistic society is that while the Chief Minister Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar fermented the issue saying ‘offering namaz in the open will not be tolerated’ few others come out in support of the Muslims offering them place voluntarily for offering namaaz.

“While some Sikh organizations came forward and offered a place for performing namaz in Gurudwaras, a Hindu person also offered a space for prayer. These instances of pluralistic brotherhood make this country a more vibrant democratic society in the world despite the fact that some fringe groups are trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the country by ratcheting up differences among communities,” elated Puniyani.
