Guv reviews tribal welfare schemes at Raj Bhavan

Hyderabad: Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan reviewed the Tribal Welfare Schemes in Rajbhavan on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said she would pursue with the Union government about the proposed Tribal University at Mulugu district, which needs Union cabinet’s clearance. The Governor asked the officials to encourage and develop entrepreneurship among tribal youth, particularly on abundantly available herbal medicines in tribal areas. She advised the officials to document the medicinal values in the herbs, roots that are known only to the local tribal community.

The Governor said she would like to visit some of the tribal areas and meet the tribal folk. “I want to make a visit to a tribal village and stay back there for a night halt to understand the cultural divide and their native problems. She said, as a medical student, she visited remote tribal areas of the Andaman Islands along with her friends to render voluntary services.

Tribal Welfare dept Secretary B.M.D. Ekka said the State government had taken various initiatives for socio, economic and educational development of Tribal community in the State. He said over 2.25 lakh students were studying in various educational institutions, exclusively meant for tribal community. He said several students were also being encouraged to study in various premier educational institutions like IIT, NIT and other Central universities. A few have appeared Civil services examinations and two candidates have cleared their civil exams held recently.

 Earlier, the Governor played with the Koya and Lambada cultural troupes of Bhadrachalam and Nagarkurnool districts. The members of the cultural troupes exclaimed that “It was for the first time that they visited Rajbhavan, Hyderabad”.

Tribal Welfare Residential School Society Secretary Dr. R.S Praveen Kumar, Tribal Welfare Commissioner Dr. Christina Chengthan and other senior officials attended.
