Hyderabad: After an outrage over a customer’s demand, Swiggy responds

Many people have expressed outrage over a Swiggy customer’s blacklisting request in Hyderabad. In the customer’s instructions for the delivery app, he stated he didn’t want a Muslim to deliver his order.

The screenshot of the instruction was later shared on social media by Shaik Salauddin, national general secretary of the Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT).

He also wrote: Dear @Swiggy please take a stand against such a bigoted request. We (Delivery workers) are here to deliver food to one and all, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh @Swiggy @TGPWU Mazhab Nahi Sikhata Aapas Mein Bair Rakhna.

As the picture went viral on social media, many netizens decried the attempt at giving food delivery a communal color, and Swiggy was urged to take action against this act of blatant bigotry.

Among the Congress MPs who supported Saluddin’s demand was Karti P. Chidambaram. In light of such blatant bigotry toward gig workers based on their religion, platform companies cannot ignore it. Is there any action that these companies are going to take in order to safeguard the rights of gig workers? he asked.

The Hindu activist Rahul Easwar has also urged Swiggy to blacklist the customer. He said that the customer spreads hate toward “our Muslim brothers”. In addition, he said, hate-mongers like these defame India.

Response from Swiggy

Swiggy was requested by TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra to blacklist the customer. Further, she demanded that a police complaint be filed against the customer, as well as the name of the customer.

Swiggy responded to Mahua by saying that, discrimination is not tolerated as an equal opportunity platform. Any such requests are not taken into consideration during the assignment of orders. Since the incident was first reported a few days ago, we’ve been trying to verify the authenticity and recency of the screenshot.

It is not the first time a customer has made such a request on a food delivery app. Due to the non-Hindu rider, a man in Madhya Pradesh canceled his Zomato order.
