Hyderabad Airport’s Decision on Haj Pilgrims Sparks Controversy and Highlights Concerns of Muslim Community in Telanga

Certainly! The airport authority in Hyderabad has stated that Haj pilgrims will not have a designated terminal at the airport. Instead, they will depart from the international terminal with normal travelers, with four specific desks to ease their travel. Many Haj pilgrims were expecting a separate terminal, as had been the norm in the past, and were dismayed by this decision.

Disappointment among Haj pilgrims is exacerbated by a perceived pattern of unfairness and indifference towards Telangana’s Muslim community since the state’s inception. Prior to the foundation of Telangana, political figures, including the current Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, promised to address the problems of the Muslim population. These promises, however, have not been fully realised.

For example, the disputed Lanco Hills land, which was first promised to the Muslim community, has been seized by the state Revenue Department, ignoring the Waqf Board. Furthermore, despite commitments from then-MLC Mohammad Mahmood Ali, who is now the state home minister, the projected mosque in the parking lot at Shamsabad Airport was never built.

Furthermore, specific amenities previously offered to Muslims in various sections of the state have been steadily phased out since Telangana’s establishment. As a result, there is a widespread belief that the current government, led by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), is alienating the Muslim population.

It has also been noticed that the Chief Minister is uninterested in minority institutions, particularly the Haj Committee. Previous Chief Ministers used to visit the Haj House every year throughout their tenure to tell pilgrims farewell, while the current Chief Minister’s last visit was in 2017. He is anticipated to make another appearance this year, since elections to the Telangana State Assembly are expected to be called soon.

Overall, the lack of a dedicated Haj Terminal, as well as Telangana’s perceived neglect of the Muslim minority, has caused fear and dissatisfaction among Haj pilgrims and the general society.
