Hyderabad: Another 46 km cycle track to come up around Gandipet

To start promoting non-motorized, environmentally friendly transportation, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao announced on Tuesday that the State government plans to build another 46-kilometer-long cycle track around the perimeter of Gandipet Lake with leisure outposts and resorts on a public-private partnership (PPP).

The Minister stated that because Osmansagar (Gandipet), Himayatsagar, and Ananthagiri Hills are in the Rangareddy district, there is an enormous opportunity for the growth of these locations as tourist destinations in the second phase after setting the foundation stone for a 23-km-long cycle track with solar roofing along two stretches of services roads of the Outer Ring Road at a cost of ’95 crore.

He stated that the State government is looking into allowing bicycles inside Metro trains because cyclists in the city are demanding that normal bicycles be permitted. He stated that a cycle track is being built in the IT corridor so that professionals can cycle to work. “It reduces pollution and improves physical fitness.”

When finished, the track for which he laid the foundation stone would be available for 24 hours. The proposed cycle track is an improved version of the South Korean model with better aesthetics and more facilities such as lighting, rain protection, parking, and wayside amenities such as food stalls.

Because lighting is provided, the cycle track can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is divided into two sections: Nanakaramguda to the Telangana State Police Academy (8.50 km) and Narsingi to Kollur (14.50 km). When completed as a loop, the effective length is 42 km.

The cycle track’s proposed width is 4.5 meters, with one meter of green space on either side. For safety, a crash barrier has been installed on the service road. The cycle track will be covered with a solar roof with a capacity of 16 MW for 21 km of its 23 km length.

Those in attendance included Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy, Sports Minister V Srinivas Goud, Chevella MP Ranjith Reddy, TRS MLC P Mahender Reddy, MAUD Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar, and GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar.
