Hyderabad: BJP MLA Raja Singh threatens to cancel Munawar Faruqui’s show

Following a previously canceled show in January this year, comedian Munawar Faruqui announced a new show in Hyderabad, leading the Telangana BJP once again to call for the show to be canceled.

In a threat to beat up Munawar and burn down the venue, controversial BJP MLA from Goshamahal T Raja Singh threatened to burn down the venue if the show went ahead.

BJP leaders had earlier threatened not to allow Munawar’s January 9 show because the comedian made jokes about Hindu gods and hurt Hindu sentiments. COVID-19 regulations eventually led to the cancellation of the show.

Munawar announced on his Instagram account on Wednesday, August 10, that he will perform his show ‘Dongri to Nowhere’ in Hyderabad on August 20. Venue details have not yet been announced.

In his remarks about Munawar, Raja Singh said, “In the past, too, our idiot Minister KTR has offered police protection and invited him, saying his event would be a success.” He added that they canceled the event, however, when Hindu groups across Telangana united to threaten him.

“Let’s see what happens if they invite him (Munawar). We will beat him up wherever the program is. Whenever he is offered a venue, we will burn it down. KTR, the government, and the police are responsible if something goes wrong,” Raja Singh said. He added that they would definitely beat him up and send him back if he came to Telangana.

Munawar was originally scheduled to perform his show ‘Dhandho’ in Hyderabad in January 2022. The announcement followed Telangana Minister and TRS working president KTR’s open invitation to the comedian after his Bengaluru show was previously canceled due to similar threats.

The Bengaluru show that was canceled was also ‘Dongri to Nowhere’, which he had performed three times before. As a jibe at the BJP government in Karnataka, KTR said Hyderabad is a truly cosmopolitan city, where standup comedians are openly invited and their shows are not canceled.
