Hyderabad: Businessman got scammed for Rs.56 lakh for a One rupee coin

This morning newspapers here reported that a 46-year-old businessman has committed suicide late Tuesday night after he was cheated by a fraudster who promised to pay Rs.56 lakh for a One rupee coin minted six decades ago. The businessman, Aravind, had sometime back posted an online advertisement for the sale of the coin minted in 1957.

A cheat contacted him and offered ₹.56 lakh for the coin. He asked  Arvind to send photos of the coin and also ₹.2, 000 towards processing charges. The fraudster later asked him to send money towards SWIFT code charges, RBI charges, Income tax, etc., and later Arvind realized he was cheated after paying ₹.26 lakhs. He paid the money by taking loans and selling his wife’s jewelry. On realizing that he was cheated, Arvind sent a WhatsApp message to his friend and committed suicide.

Along with this report, Police said that they have recently received three such cases of cheating in the name of old coins, and advised the public to be careful about such cases and not get cheated.

This type of cheating appears to be the latest technique adopted by fraudsters. So, people should be aware of these types of tricks. Cheats may also send online messages or issue advertisements offering a huge amounts for old coins, and they may respond if one sends a message about having an old coin. Beware of frauds in the name of old coins, or old currency notes.
