Hyderabad: Cockroach found in Kondapur hotel food prompts GHMC inspection

Following a complaint from a customer that a cockroach was found in his food, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials inspected a popular hotel in Kondapur on Wednesday.

An individual with the Twitter handle @KPHB_Kurradu raised the complaint on social media. A report was submitted to the GHMC after an inspection of the establishment was conducted.

Multiple complaints of adulteration

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials are said to begin field inspections of city restaurants, hotels, and eateries to detect adulteration and other illegal practices. The inspections will be carried out by several mobile teams of Food Safety Officers, Assistant Medical Officers of Health (AMOH), and veterinary officials.

The development occurred after city mayor G Vijaya Laxmi expressed her displeasure with the city’s Food Safety Officers’ performance and directed the officers to conduct regular inspections. Several complaints have recently been filed with city officials regarding illegal cooking practices in the city.

“The team of officials will be conducting widespread inspections of hotels and restaurants across the city. If any violations are found, strict actions will be initiated against the shop and eateries,” a senior civic official was quoted as saying.

According to the mayor, officers are not taking concrete steps to prevent adulteration.

Last month, GHMC officials stated that food adulteration had been reported not only in small hotels but also in some of the city’s popular star restaurants. The vast majority of complaints about adulteration came from online customers.

Customers who order food online account for 60 to 70 percent of all adulteration complaints. Food adulteration has been discovered in restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops, and cafes, according to E Sudarshan Reddy, food safety officer at GHMC.

During an inspection earlier this year, authorities discovered that 10% of every 100 food samples tested were unsafe or substandard. Approximately 98 of the 926 samples tested were found to be unsafe, misbranded, or substandard.

The mayor has now directed officials to take tough action against those who are caught selling adulterated or substandard ingredients.
