Hyderabad college students protest over alleged video recording in washrooms; 7 suspects being grilled

female students at CMR Engineering College in Medchal, Hyderabad, protested against alleged secret video recordings in the hostel bathrooms. The students accused some hostel workers of placing hidden cameras to record them without consent. They also expressed concerns about inadequate security measures and claimed that previous complaints to the management were ignored.

The protest intensified when students noticed hand imprints on bathroom ventilators, suggesting unauthorized access. Leaders from student unions, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), joined the demonstration, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators and the college management. They alleged that female students were being blackmailed and criticized the warden for making objectionable remarks when informed about the recordings.

In response, police detained seven hostel workers for questioning and seized their mobile phones to investigate the allegations. As of now, no formal complaint has been filed, and an official First Information Report (FIR) has not been registered. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities assuring students of a thorough probe into the incident.

This incident follows a similar case in August 2024 at Seshadri Rao Gudlavalleru Engineering College in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, where students protested after discovering a hidden camera in the women’s hostel washroom. The accused in that case allegedly recorded over 300 videos and circulated them among male students.

These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety and privacy of female students in educational institutions, prompting calls for stricter security measures and prompt action against those responsible.
