Hyderabad hit by heavy rains on Monday; IMD issues yellow alert

On Monday evening, heavy rains accompanied by thunder hit several parts of Hyderabad, lowering temperatures and inundating low-lying areas and busy thoroughfares.

The torrential rain adversely affected commuter traffic in Hyderabad, as roads at key intersections were flooded. Huge traffic jams were reported in several areas, including Begumpet-Punjagutta, Secunderabad, Banjara Hills, and main roads in Madhapur and Rajendranagar.

Massive thunderstorms were reported in the southern and central parts of Hyderabad for almost an hour. Thunderstorms were reported in Uppal, Nagole, LB Nagar, Tarnaka, Boduppal, Amberpet, OU, Nampally, Abids, Mehdipatnam, and Malakpet. Showers were also intense in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet, and Punjagutta.

Following a brief respite in recent days, a monsoon trough is expected to bring light to moderate rain with thunderstorms to the state capital beginning Tuesday. The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) forecasts rain for the next two days across the city.

On Tuesday, Charminar, LB Nagar, Rajendranagar, Malakpet, Falaknuma, and Chandrayangutta are expected to receive moderate rainfall (15.60 mm-64.40mm), while the rest of the city will receive only light rain.

For the next two days, all other districts in the state can expect light to moderate rain. On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department – Hyderabad (IMD-H) issued a yellow alert for the districts of Narayanpet, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Karimnagar, and Rajanna Sircilla.

DRF teams move into action

Following the downpour on Monday evening, the GHMC’s monsoon action teams and Disaster Response Force (DRF) were called into action. In addition to clearing water-logged roads, municipal workers addressed rain-related complaints received via the GHMC helpline number (040-2111 1111).

Complaints made via Twitter and those reported by elected representatives, including corporators, were both addressed.

Inundated water was also pumped out of low-lying areas by monsoon teams and DRF. Many areas, including the Shaikpet-Tolichowki stretch, Khairatabad, Reinbazar, Musarambagh, and Attapur were some among many areas where the teams took up monsoon work to restore normalcy.
