Hyderabad: Journalists charged for sharing rape victim videos

A group of web journalists have been charged with cybercrime by the Central Crime Station (CCS) for sharing videos of the alleged victim with the accused in connection with an alleged gang rape at Jubilee Hills.

A few journalists and YouTubers have been targeted by the Hyderabad police suo-moto over the video. At a Saturday press conference, BJP legislator Raghunandan Rao revealed the video and photograph, purportedly taken by youths, showing the victim girl accompanying the accused.

As per the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 23 of the POCSO Act, the cyber crime police have booked two cases under sections 153A (promoting enmity between the two groups), 469 (forgery affecting the reputation of another party), 505(1)(b) (inciting hatred against another class or community). Moreover, new sections have also been added to the Juvenile Justice Act. The cybercrime cops served notices under CrPC section 41A to a few web journalists shortly after registering the FIRs. A deadline of June 8 has been set for journalists to respond.

According to police, the accused tried cleaning his car to destroy evidence

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped on May 28 by five youths, including three minors, in Hyderabad. The accused attempted to destroy evidence of the crime by wiping off the car where the crime took place.

Despite the efforts to destroy evidence, investigators were able to recover some significant items – such as biological fluid, earrings, footwear, and hair – and send them for forensic examination.
