Hyderabad: ‘Million March’ planned to protest against Nupur Sharma’s comments

The Tehreek Muslim Shaban has called for a ‘million march’ on June 18 in protest against Nupur Sharma’s offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed.  The call comes from the organization’s founder Mohd. Mushtaq Malik.

Malik, who is also the convenor for the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Joint Action Committee, noted that it will take place on June 18 near Indira Park, at Dharna Chowk.

Mushtaq Malik announced that about 35 organizations are supporting the ‘million march and thousands are expected to take part in Saturday’s protest at Dharna Chowk.

“I have assured the police that the protest will be peaceful. People are protesting against the blasphemous and derogatory remarks made by Nupur Sharma on a television channel against Prophet Mohammed. Instead of arresting Nupur Sharma, the BJP party provided her with security,” Mushtaq Malik said.

Mushtaq Malik said they had “informed” the police about the march in advance and asked them to make necessary arrangements. “We are exercising our fundamental right to protest. Our record on various protests is very good,” he said.

Thousands of people participated in the previous Million March organized by the Joint Action Committee against the CAA/NRC.

The police have been informed that a city-based political party has also approached them and informed them that they intend to organize a protest march against Nupur Sharma.

In the meantime, the police officials got to work gathering all information possible about the Million March, as well as the organizations supporting the protest march so they could determine how many people would participate and other security-related concerns.

Protests had also erupted outside the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad on Friday over controversial comments made by Nupur Sharma.

After the police intervened, the protesters were dispersed. CRPF and police have since been deployed in the area.
