Hyderabad: Musi floods memorial meeting took place on Wednesday

On Wednesday, the Forum for a Better Hyderabad held a memorial meeting under the Great Tamarind Tree in the park of Osmania General Hospital to commemorate 115 years of devastating floods in the Musi River.

Speaking on the occasion, Forum for a Better Hyderabad chairman Veda Kumar Manikonda said that the catastrophic Musi floods of September 28, 1908, remain the greatest disaster in Hyderabad’s history.

Several people were washed away by the current of water during the floods, resulting in the loss of life and property. Some people saved their lives by climbing this Tamarind Tree, he said.

P Anuradha Reddy, a historian, and convenor of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) recalled the famous Hyderabadi poet Amjad Hussain, also known as Amjad Hyderabadi, who wrote a poem titled “Qayamat-e-Soghra” (The Minor Doomsday) about his experience during the 1908 floods in Musi.

Veda Kumar also said the Sixth Nizam Mir Mahabub Ali Khan Pasha opened all of his major palaces to provide shelter to the homeless, organize kitchens, and provide free food to the affected individuals for several days.

According to reports, the Nizam wore dhoti and “jandhyam” like a Brahmin and offered prayers at Musi to appease the river on the advice of his astrologers.

The meeting was co-organized by Deccan Heritage Academy, Centre for Deccan Studies, JBR Architecture College, SPA, JNAFAU, and other civil society groups. For the past 15 years, the Forum has organized a commemorative meeting under the Tamarind Tree, which ended up saving 150 people.

Veda Kumar advised the state government to develop an integrated master plan for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area as well as a drainage master plan to avoid flooding in the city. He praised the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department for establishing STPs in the city to clean up the Musi River.
