Hyderabad: Police bust online cricket betting racket; five arrested

As per the latest reports, Rachakonda police arrested five people on Thursday for alleged involvement in online cricket betting.

The police seized Rs 6,00,000 in cash and Rs 10,71,318 in frozen funds in two ICICI bank accounts belonging to two of the accused, Munukuntla Soundarya and Thota Koteshwar Rao. The accused also had four mobile phones confiscated.

Govind Rajesh Kumar, Konduru Srinivas, and Satish Raju were the other accused. Bhasker is a sub-bookie from Sai Sapthagiri Colony, Mansoorabad, LB Nagar, who makes money by organizing cricket betting in Hyderabad during the T20 World Cup.

Raju created a user ID and password to exchange betting on Metro, an online betting app where users can bet on multiple games by registering and obtaining the user id and password for a subscription fee.

Those interested in betting contacted Satish Raju, who would generate IDs and send them to Bhaskar while also informing the punter. After receiving the user id and password, the punter must pay a fee to play on the website.

The betting begins with the first ball of the match and continues until the last ball, fluctuating depending on the match’s situation.

Reports said that while the game is on, the punters call the bookies and place their bets. While placing bets, bookies record the details of the bet and the punter, and the conversation is automatically recorded. After the match, bookies inform agents about the details of the collection and distribution of the amount, such as how much money must be collected from a specific punter and how much money must be given.

The Special Operations team raided Bhaskar’s house in Sai Sapathagiri Colony, Mansoorabad, LB Nagar and apprehended the accused while they were betting on the match between West Indies and Zimbabwe.
