Hyderabad: Rooftop solar power plants to be installed at 13 Metro stations, depots

Rooftop solar power plants will be set up on 13 Metro Stations and depots in the city as part of the state’s green energy initiative.

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited, a public-private partnership project between the Telangana government and Larsen & Toubro Limited, recently came into an agreement with Amp Energy India to set up solar plants with a combined capacity of 4 MW.

Previously, Amp Energy constructed a 7.8 MW solar plant for the L&T metro project to power its 24 stations and two depots. On December 26, 2020, the first phase solar plant was fully commissioned.

L&T Metro Rail’s solar plant capacity would increase to 11.8 MW with the proposed 4 MW. When the 4 MW solar power plant project is completed, 37 Metro stations will be connected by solar energy. The Hyderabad Metro currently has 66 stations spread across three corridors and three interchange stations.

The 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amp Energy for solar power procurement will generate 11,300 MW of green energy per year.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Project will use solar power supplied by Amp Energy to meet 15% of total electrical consumption. According to officials, the solar energy plants will assist the L&T Metro in saving a significant amount of money spent on power.

The company representatives have stated that it is a difficult project because it is a multi- location project and it involves working on operational Metro stations only for a few hours at night.

Amp Energy India has also installed rooftop solar power plants in the car parking areas of the L&T Metro Rail. Amp Energy India is the Indian subsidiary of the Amp Energy Group, which is based in Canada.
