Hyderabad: Security tightened around Munawar Faruqui’s show

Munawar Faruqui is scheduled to perform at Shilpakala Vedika in Madhapur (Hitec City) on Saturday evening. Reportedly, A security blanket has been thrown around the venue. On Friday, several senior police officials from the Cyberabad police inspected the venue’s security arrangements.

To meet security arrangements, around 500 policemen will be deployed at the venue. The auditorium will be guarded by policemen in civilian attire while police in uniform will guard the venue outside, a Cyberabad police official said. Many people will see Munawar Faruqui’s protection as a sign that the state is standing up for personal liberty.

Police are said to thoroughly inspect all visitors coming to see Munawar Faruqui perform. Surveillance cameras are also installed at the venue. The security drill will also be supervised by senior police officials.

After several right-wing organizations called for the show to be disrupted, security measures have been implemented.

BJP Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh called for canceling Friday’s show and disrupting it. When he attempted to reach Shilpakala Vedika to register his protest, the Hyderabad police took him into preventive custody. Singh has been targeting Munawar Faruqui since he announced his show. The MLA has said he won’t hesitate to ‘burn down’ the set in videos he has released.

Munawar Faruqui had been invited to perform in Hyderabad earlier by the Minister for Information Technology, K T Rama Rao. In the past, Munawar Faruqui’s shows have been canceled because of threats as well. He comes from Gujarat, the home state of PM Narendra Modi, and is known for his slapstick humor.

When the Madhya Pradesh police jailed him last year, many from the civil society came to his rescue. As a result of his alleged anti-Hindu jokes, Faruqui was imprisoned for one month in Indore.
