Hyderabad: State govt to start organ transplant block in Gandhi Hospital

Health minister T Harish Rao announced on Sunday that the state government would start an organ transplantation block in Gandhi Hospital for the 3000 patients who are in need of organ transplant surgery.

To facilitate the service, the minister has urged people to come forward for organ donation.

Speaking at Gandhi Hospital’s ‘National Organ Donation Day program’, Rao said that cooperation from doctors was essential for the success of organ donation.

He went on to say that over 3,180 people had applied for organ transplants in the past, but only the wealthy could afford the surgery.

Rao stated that with the implementation of this new initiative by the chief minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, transplantation surgery will be made available to the poor sections of society.

Harish Rao has promised to establish an organ transplant block at the hospital with a budget of Rs 35 crore. The tender process has been completed, and the center will be operational within the next 5-6 months.

According to the minister, the government is looking into the possibility of providing free admission to children of the deceased in government residential schools, as well as giving priority in allotting double-bedroom houses.

He proposed using helicopters to transport the organs of the brain dead. “Special attention has been paid to areas where road accidents are more frequent”, said the minister.

The minister felicitated relatives of brain-dead victims who chose to donate organs at the event. Rao stated that tertiary hospitals in Hyderabad and district hospitals must work together to ensure a steady flow of donor organs.

Harish Rao also said that people suffer from health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes as a result of a lack of physical activity.

“The government was unable to undertake the renovation of Osmania Hospital due to a case in the High Court,” the minister added, hoping that doctors at Osmania Hospital could also perform organ transplantation using existing infrastructure.
