Hyderabad teen dies after getting anesthesia administered for surgery

Hyderabad: Amid an unfortunate and shocking incident, a 13-year-old boy died allegedly after getting administered anesthesia for his surgery at a hospital in the city.

According to reports, he was given the injection before commencing the surgery for his cataract at a super-specialty eye care facility.

The boy, Prashanth Reddy, lived in Kukatpally’s Allwyn Colony and had come to Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital with his parents for getting surgery on the cataract in his eye.

While undergoing the procedure, the boy’s health condition allegedly became worse after which the hospital authorities immediately shifted him to a children’s hospital to treat him.

Unfortunately, he could not be saved and took his last breath in the Banjara Hills hospital on Tuesday.

His parents raised questions on their son’s death following which the father, Ganapati Reddy, reached the Punjagutta Police Station and lodged a complaint against the hospital, requesting a probe in the cause of the sudden death.

However, the hospital management at Dr. Agarwal has expressed their dismay over the incident and claimed that the condition of Prashanth worsened even before they gave him anesthesia.

The Eye Hospital said, “during the procedure of starting to administer anesthesia, the patient’s general condition became unstable, following which all immediate resuscitation measures were carried out by Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital. The patient was promptly shifted to one of the best pediatric ICU centers in the city for further treatment so that expert doctors and technicians could administer the highest quality care to the patient. We are extending all possible cooperation and care to the family of the patient.”

A similar incident took place in Bengaluru in 2019 when a couple hailing from Tamil Nadu took their son Shankar who was suffering from a retina issue.

After the operation got completed, Shankar’s health started deteriorating due to which the hospital told them to shift him to another hospital.

The People Tree Hospital declared him dead on arrival after which the parents filed an FIR against the doctors who carried out the surgery, calling it a case of doctors’ negligence as their son was doing fine before the operation.

Another case in Bengaluru surfaced when a 16-year-old boy brought for liposuction died of “anesthesia overdose” during surgery.
