Hyderabad: Traffic police to collect unpaid challans from doorsteps

A special initiative has been launched by the Hyderabad traffic police to collect unpaid traffic challans from motorists who failed to pay them during the discount scheme.

The traffic police have compiled a list of vehicle owners who have huge fines due to different traffic violations pending against them.

There is a traffic police team visiting the house of the owner of the vehicle, and they are detaining the vehicle. The full amount of the challan will be collected from them, said a senior official of the Hyderabad traffic police.

The traffic police have also been stationing special teams consisting of a sub-inspector, a couple of constables and home guards, at important intersections and arterial roads in the city to check pending challans against motorists.

The special drive usually takes place in the mornings or late at night. Detained vehicles are only released after the challan is cleared.

In addition, a charge sheet has been filed in court against those who have not cleared the challans. No discounts will be offered now; the full amount must be paid and the vehicle owner must also appear in the court, the official explained.

For a period of one-and-a-half months beginning from March 1, Telangana police had announced discounts for vehicle owners to clear challans. A 25 percent payment was requested from two-wheelers, a 50 percent payment from four wheels, a 30 percent payment for RTC buses, and a 20 percent payment were requested from pushcarts. Following the lockdowns triggered by Covid, the decision was made considering the economic situation of the citizens.

During the ‘discount offer,’ approximately 65 percent of pending traffic challans in Hyderabad had been cleared, according to officials. 3 crore challans were cleared by motorists across Telangana.
